How Tall Was Jesus?

This past Sunday I spoke on the humanity of Jesus. There was quite a bit of shock in the room when I announced that the average specs on a 1st century Jewish male would have been 5' 1" and 110 lbs. Since Jesus was a normal, real-life human being living in the 1st century, we can assume that he was somewhere around this height and weight. It is quite weird thinking that Jesus was, well, from a Western perspective, small. But he was fully man and would have looked like all the other Jewish men living in the 1st century. He might have been a bit taller than 5' 1" but we can safely assume he didn't tower over everyone like a giant. He was an average, normal looking human. Side point: no more making fun of short people!

Below is an attempt from forensic anthropologist to reconstruct a more accurate picture of Jesus as shown in the magazine Popular Mechanics in 2002:

  1. David was a Jew as well but the bible says he was of ruddy (red) complexion.

Jesus could well have looked like the above but we cannot be certain

    1. Red tan like a brownish reddish tan you freak. Its logic!! Ancient hebrews, so as king David and Jesus were burned brass coloured (it varies from olive, red/brown to also black skin) do more research will you!!??

  2. Judas had to kiss him in the garden so the soldiers could tell him apart from the others. This tells me, from a storied point of view at least, that he looked like every on else at the time.

  3. Why does EVERYONE forgets that Jesus was the son of GOD? and automatically opine his looks, height, was one of a typical 1st century Judean man? Was there anything about Jesus that was typical? In fact, all the tribes of Israel had different ethnic looks and the variety was as expansive as it is in any modern society now a days. No one better than GOD , would know what it would take to impress the people of Israel and a man that did not look typical would automatically gather that attention. In the history of latin American much is talked about the tall, blonde blue eyed man who preached amongst them, - Reasons for which the Spaniards took control of South America so easily. the Native North American also speak of this man and describe him also as tall, blonde & blue eyed.
It is laughable to speak of Jesus Christ and refer to him as a common average man.

    2. Your answer is pure speculation. Besides, Judas had to kiss him so the romans could take him to crucifixion. He was like every average hebrew. Its not an opinion, its a fact... Ancient hebrews were olive skinned, wooly or dreadlock haired with eagle nose shape and golden eyes (its in revelations 1:14, book of Daniel and babylonian art); a result of racial mixing between caucasians, negroes and mongolians. Somewhere in the bible says "no beauty we should desire him", this means he was like everyone else in Palestine. Watch Ray Downing's facial construction on Jesus based on the shroud of turin, seems accurate enough since the shroud is autentic (don't give that dumb argument that the shroud is a fake) and since the man looks arab, and Jesus was arab.Still Ray Downing is eurocentric and made of Jesus a white tan. As I already told you, indigenous arab people are all mixed as regards to race. Arabia is actually the midpoint between Africa, Europe and Asia. God Is Not Racist!!!

  4. The only thing laughable is your research and powers of thought perception. The whole reason God sent Jesus was so he could reach out to humans in a way we understand. Of course Jesus was like every man but only skin deep.

  5. Hello, My name is Enoch Gonzalez Jr. I despise many so-called christians now-a-days due to the fact that they don't follow the true faith of christ. Its sad to say that many christians in our time Judge people which turn most individuals away from GOD and the way of Jesus. We are not GOD we are just people so stop playing GOD and stop judging. We as christians must accept everyone no matter who and what they believe. look-like, or sound like. Jesus never walked around and said do not speak with anyone that's not christian. He taught us a way of acceptance/purity and love. For example, many christians say that all homosexuals are going to hell and to not associate with that kind of culture. In reality Jesus himself never said a word on Homosexuals and no I'm not a homosexual, but from my understanding we are to follow Gods commandments and none say anything on homosexuality. I do feel that homosexuals are sexually active individuals which can open the doors for sin/sexual activity among our youth, but I feel if theres love in the relationship and responsibility then thats all that matters. The sin is being sexually active whether your gay or straight. If a gay man or woman stay together faithfully they will be judged accordingly by GOD. Your just as much of a sinner being a straight man or women sleeping around. The 7th commandant states (You shall not commit adultery). That goes for both the gays and straights. Now for the height and looks of Jesus. I must say he's as average looking as anyone else, built with a spirit like no-one else.
